LONDON ROAD ACTION GROUP may not have answers to most questions, but has the expertise and knowledge to direct enquirers to source material. We may even have background information not readily accessible.
All enquiries to our email addresses ([email protected] or [email protected]) will be acknowledged and answered to the best possible extent. However, this is a Surrey County Council project and any conflict with their answers has to be left to the reader’s own determination, which is most likely to be the more accurate.

STANDARDS
- What are the design standards used to create the London Road scheme?
- What maximum traffic and minimum cycling usage rates are required to designate the zone outside Guildford High School for “inclusive cycling within the carriageway”.
- Does the scheme adhere, using best practice, to all of the standards/guidance?
- Are there any non-compliances, and if so, what are the mitigating factors to justify them, in terms of safety or efficiency?
- Do the accident statistics for London Road (persons killed or seriously injured per Km) reflect those of the county of Surrey as a whole?
- Has the only other UK Dutch-style roundabout in Cambridge been safe?
- How are pedestrians (able-bodied and those with visual, audio and mobility issues) protected from cyclists on shared tracks?
- What percentage of the “Burpham stretch” is shared track for both pedestrians and cyclists?
- What safety measures are in place at bus stops for passengers alighting and descending in the presence of cyclists?
- Is the 1.5m separation of the Highway Code (for vehicles passing cyclists) applicable to cycle tracks? See Buffer Space
- Will "rat run" routes to avoid London Road congestion become less safe as a result?
- Is the statement in the letter to residents: “the road will remain the same width as it is currently” correct?
- Will the following features continue to permit expeditious flow for all road users:
- Narrowing of London Road to a single lane (southbound) at the York Road junction?
- Removal of central “ghost” islands, permitting nearside passage, at right turns (Cross Lanes, Ennismore Avenue, Boxgrove Avenue, Ganghill, Abbotswood (North and South entrances))?
- Reduced carriageway widths at bus stops?
- Additional pedestrian crossings?
- 13 Raised Tables between Boxgrove and York Road?
- Pedestrian and cyclists prioritised crossings and routes at Boxgrove Roundabout?
- How will emergency services get through traffic at peak times with the proposed carriageway widths?
- How many parking spaces will be removed beside Stoke Park?
- How were the existing parking spaces counted as resident estimates are much lower?
- Were any other routes for cyclists considered, and why were they rejected?
- How does the effectiveness and cost of speed cameras compare with raised tables for calming traffic speed?
- Is there a ride comfort issue for buses over raised tables, especially for standing passengers?
- In total, how many night time closures will there be during construction?
- What diversion arrangements will exist during periods of road closure?
- Will late evening shoppers and diners, as well as residents, be permitted access during closures?
- What noise measurements will be conducted during night time working?
- How do the existing numbers of cyclists compare with the number of vehicles using London Road?
- How will those numbers change after the Scheme has been built?
- Will overtaking of stationary vehicles and slow-moving cyclists be permitted in the 20-mph zone?
- What will be done if the Scheme causes levels of congestion not predicted by modelling?
- Will traffic calming measures be introduced on routes suggested as rat runs?
- Why are raised tables only proposed for the section from Boxgrove, and not in the Burpham section with shared paths?
- Will the effects on pollution be measured pre-, during and post-completion to prove the effectiveness towards net zero?
- Will cycle tracks and footways be kept regularly swept and vegetation kept cut back in times of financial constraint?
- How will the survey assess if there is overwhelming opposition (as stated by the Leader of the Council on 5th January), and not proceed?
- How does the survey prevent inappropriate bias by those outside the area affected?
- When will work start if approved?
- What is the expected sequencing of works along London Road (starting at Burpham, or York Road, or Boxgrove Roundabout)?
- How much will each additional new cyclist have cost the taxpayer?
- What method of cost/benefit analysis is being applied to the Scheme?
